About Oh Ok

Saturday Aug 14, 2010

Saturday Aug 14, 2010

The original line-up of Oh-OK featured: Linda Hopper (vocals, lyrics), Lynda Stipe (bass, vocals, lyrics) and David Pierce (drums, percussion). The band began with lyrics written by Lynda Stipe and Linda Hopper. Stipe had worked out the melodies on her short-scale Dan Armstrong Dan-Electro Bass guitar, which she had replaced the bass strings with guitar strings, which brought the instrument up one octave and allowed her to play the melody instead of a simple bass rhythm. Hopper developed her vocal style by accentuating Stipes melodies with a conversational style of singing. When they met up in the summer of 1983 for a casual jam session, the three immediately created the song "Lilting"  and after rehearsing it only once, committed it to tape using a small tape deck and a single microphone. The tape from that session (all copies were subsequently lost) were sent to friends in several local bands (R.E.M., B-52s, Love Tractor and Pylon) as well as to Danny Beard, proprietor of DB Records (who discovered and recorded the B-52s). After hearing the band once live he asked them to record for his label and the band recorded "Wow Mini-Album" at a local christian broadcasting station with local producer Bruce Baxter.

The founding members agreed amicably to split up 1n 1984 and seek individual means of expression. (There were several reincarnations of Oh Ok that at on time included Matthew Sweet, but this podcast is only about the original line-up)
